50 missing as boat capsizes in Mediterranean

A boat carrying 51 migrants capsized in the Mediterranean recently, with one confirmed alive and 50 still missing, local media reported.

The only survivor was rescued by a merchant ship and transported to a hospital in Malta for treatment.
According to the survivor, the boat sailed off from Libya on Thursday and capsized the next day. The survivor held tight to the wreckage and floated on the water before being rescued.

After the accident, search and rescue operations were launched, and 50 people were still missing.

Data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) showed that 14 people have gone missing or confirmed dead in the Mediterranean since the beginning of this year. The number of deaths and disappearances reached 1,873 along the route in 2024.
